Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook *

Something terrible happened to Junie B. Jones at school today! Someone stole her new furry mittens! So when Junie B. finds a wonderful pen of many colors, she should be allowed to keep it, right? Because finders keepers, losers weepers. And guess what? There's a new boy in kindergarten and he is the handsomest. The only thing is both Grace and Lucille want him to be their boyfriend. Maybe he will love Junie B. when he sees her wonderful pen! It is okay to keep it, right? Junie B. Jones is not a crook . . . or is she? A hilarious and heartfelt tale based on the best-selling book series by Barbara Park.

Production Involvement

As assistant director for this production, I was tasked with maintaining the visual and dramaturgical integrity of the show, blocking Junie’s daydream sequences, and running the rehearsal environment when the director was unable to attend.

As a teaching artist working primarily with elementary age children, my approach in this process was how can we honor the themes, lessons and morals of this show? I deeply believe that we do not teach children theatre so that we can raise the next generation of actors, but rather to raise a generation of empathetic problem-solvers. When children see Junie B., a kindergartener like them, listen to her friends and try understand their feelings, they will begin to implement these practices in their lives too. And by keeping that at the heart of our production, we were able to bring this production to life for over 8,000 K-12 students in North Georgia.
